World of Warcraft - Wrath of the Lich King: Game Director im Interview

  Personal Computer

Interview with Tom "Kalgan" Chilton (Game Director WoW) - Englische Version

Tom was one of the six Games Designers for the classic World of Warcraft. And one of the three Lead Designers for its Add-on "The Burning Crusade". He is now the Game Director for WoW. Being the head of the Development Department he has a lot of communication tasks between the different development sections, sitting in various meetings day in day out. And sometimes he is the last to stop things from going out of hand or saying no to half cooked features.

Q: Tom, thx for being with us. Let's directly start with our first question, which came up from our community asking for the drugs you gave to your quest authors and designers while working on "Wrath of the Lich King". Especially the content for the Deathknight became very entertaining with all those funny references pointing to movies like 300. And don't tell us it was just caffeine?

A: Well, I guess it means that they just like the drugs. If that is the case, I have to make sure to give more of them to the team. Basically a lot of Red Bull, Soda and I think more than that. So that should qualify for an answer.

Q: So you could say that the whole team now is in a good pace having more time and fun with the development tools than maybe in the earlier years?

A: Yeah, I think so. Over time our tools have been developing in terms of what we can do as quest designers. And also the quest design team has been refining their methods and gained skill over the past several years. So there is no doubt that the stuff they are doing now is of a higher quality level than the things we did in the past. And hopefully that trend is going to continue.

Q: Do you share the feeling that the Deathknight overshines the other classes a bit? And if so, what would be the plan to give the rest of the show a bit more sex appeal?

A: I definitely think that this is true to some degree. There were a couple of areas in the game where the Deathknight had been overpowered, and we have taken measures over the last two patches to tone that down a bit. For example they had been tanking a bit too good. They had too many good mitigation buttons to stop incoming damage. They were a little bit too strong in PvP due to those abilities, and at the same time dealing a little bit too much damage. So to bring that back into line with the other classes is what we need to keep doing.

Q: What is your personal favourite class since WoTLK? And which classes will see the most love of the dev team in the next weeks?

World of Warcraft - Wrath of the Lich King

A: Well, I can't claim to have a personally favoured class. That would certainly be bad for World of Warcraft. But even beyond that there are a lot of guys that work on the character classes. It is really a team effort to do all those things. With the patch 3.2 the shaman got some enhancements concerning his totems and hit points. And we will continue to make sure that all of the four different tanking classes are brought into one line. Not only PvE-wise but aswell in PvP.

Q: In the last months you guys purged WoW a bit. Things like the Tier-Quests for fishing or cooking were abandoned. Elite mobs in the classic regions were downgraded etc. We have quite a few voices rising within the community, being not really happy with this casual gamer route. They fear that it became too easy. Please tell us your point of view on the worldwide feedback on that approach.

A: I would first ask how many of those with this feedback have beaten all Ulduar? I guess that number is zero. So there is still certainly a lot of hardcore content out there. Like how far have they progressed in the arena and tried to compete with the best of the world.

World of Warcraft - Wrath of the Lich King

There are definitely challenges in World of Warcraft
that we try to maintain as accomplishments to hardcore players - things that are really hard to do. It's just that we want most of the content in the game to be accessible by most of the players. We don't want to continue the path where the vast majority of our development effort is focused around a few percent of our player base.
